\nMost of the U.S. Government Accountability Office\u2019s reports are freely available to the public via GAO.gov. For decades, however, the agency has kept a minority of these reports secret.<\/p>\n

These so-called \u201crestricted reports\u201d<\/a> are withheld from the public, according to the GAO, because they contain \u201ceither classified information or controlled unclassified information by the audited agencies and cannot be publicly released.\u201d Some of these reports eventually do get released publicly in redacted form, such as this 2011 GAO study<\/a> on the Internal Revenue Service and whistleblowers….
