In the U.S.A., corporations  typically are chartered through states.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Cross\u2019s national organization  was chartered via federal statute on January 5, 1905.<\/p>\n<p>Congress\u00a0 modified the  charter most recently amended the charter in 2007. See\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/frwebgate.access.gpo.gov\/cgi-bin\/getdoc.cgi?dbname=110_cong_public_laws&amp;docid=f:publ026.110.pdf\">P.L. 110-26<\/a>, which became law May 11, 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The most up-to-date version of the Red Cross&#8217;s charter may be  found on the <a href=\"http:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/download\/pls\/36C3001.txt\">website of the House of Representative\u2019s Office of the Law Revision  Counsel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also of note: In October 2006, the Red Cross published a report that advocated for revisions to its congressional charter: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/www-files\/Documents\/Governance\/BOGGovernanceReport.pdf\">American  Red Cross Governance for the 21st Century: A Report of the Board of  Governors<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A charter is a document of incorporation.
