Ugh- Get Me a Re-Write, by Kevin R. Kosar, February 2009
This book has a few good ideas in it and some entertaining yarns; but as a whole, it is not worth the reader’s time.
Clinchy rants that U.S. schools are awful and that the No Child Left Behind Act and privatization are wreaking havoc. He rarely cites research to support his assertions.
He says the solution to our schooling problems is democratic public school choice. Parents should be free to pick the school their child attends and then play a role in the oversight and operation of the school. He says different children need different schools with different curricula, yet he strongly advocates one approach to pedagogy —child interest based learning— as obviously superior to all others. The author advocates school choice but rules out allowing parents to send their children to private or religious schools.
As the title indicates, the author’s first objective is to “rescue the public schools;” helping the kids comes second.
