In August 2012, I visited the Pollock-Krasner house in East Hampton, New York. The popular image of the Hamptons is opulence—giant homes on the ocean-front guarded by 20-foot hedges.
Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner made their home in the Springs area, which never has been plush. Even today the Springs is much less densely settled than downtown East Hampton. It features modest homes, automobile repair shops, and the sort of businesses that make East Hampton run.
Pollock and Krasner’s place is a saltbox just off a woodsy road. There is not much near it, and probably was even more remote when Jackson and Lee moved there in the 1940. The contrast between the quiet rural solitude and the explosion of art that occurred within is striking.
$5 gains one admittance to the house and Pollock’s barn work-space.
